What is Cervical Spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis is age-related wear and tear of the spinal disks in your neck (cervical spine). As disks dehydrate and shrink, signs of osteoarthritis develop, including bony projections along the edges of bones (bone spurs or osteophytes) which can compress spinal nerves or the spinal cord.

Related Conditions

  • Cervical Radiculopathy: Compression of a nerve root causing radiating pain, numbness, and weakness down the arm and into the fingers.
  • Cervical Myelopathy: Compression of the spinal cord in the neck causing clumsy hands, gait stiffness, and balance issues.

Symptoms

  • Neck stiffness, muscle spasms, and aching pain
  • Tingling, numbness, or weakness in the shoulders, arms, hands, or fingers
  • Sharp radiating electric shock sensations down the arm
  • Headaches originating from the base of the skull
  • Difficulty with fine motor skills like buttoning shirts or writing
