What is Vertigo & Dizziness?

Vertigo is a sensation of feeling off balance, accompanied by a spinning sensation where you feel that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving. Dizziness can also manifest as lightheadedness, faintness, or unsteadiness.

Common Causes

  • BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo): Tiny calcium particles clump in inner ear canals.
  • Vestibular Migraine: Migraine causing episodes of vertigo with or without headache.
  • Vestibular Neuritis / Labyrinthitis: Inner ear inflammation following a viral infection.
  • Meniere's Disease: Inner ear fluid buildup causing vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing fluctuations.
  • Central Vertigo (Stroke / TIA / Cerebellar Lesions): Vertigo stemming from the brainstem or cerebellum requiring immediate neurological evaluation.

Symptoms

  • Spinning sensation with head movement
  • Nausea, vomiting, and cold sweats
  • Loss of balance and unsteady walking
  • Ringing in ears (tinnitus) or ear fullness

Treatment & Repositioning Maneuvers

Dr. Rajni Fulwariya differentiates central from peripheral causes, performing canalith repositioning maneuvers (such as Epley's maneuver) for BPPV, medical vestibular suppressants, and personalized vestibular rehabilitation therapy.
