What is Myositis and Myopathy?

Myopathy is a general term for primary diseases of the muscle tissue leading to weakness, wasting, or stiffness. Myositis refers specifically to inflammatory conditions causing muscle fiber inflammation and progressive proximal muscle weakness.

Types of Muscle Disorders

• Polymyositis & Dermatomyositis: Autoimmune inflammatory myopathies with or without characteristic skin rashes (heliotrope rash, Gottron's papules).
• Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM): Slowly progressive weakness in fingers, quadriceps, and swallowing muscles in older adults.
• Metabolic & Endocrine Myopathies: Thyroid-induced, steroid-induced, or glycogen/lipid storage disorders.
• Muscular Dystrophies: Genetic disorders causing progressive muscle wasting.

Symptoms

• Weakness in proximal muscles (difficulty climbing stairs, getting out of chairs, lifting arms above head)
• Muscle aching, tenderness, or cramping
• Fatigue during physical exertion
